Second Skin for Tattoos: What You Need to Know
If you’ve just had a tattoo done, you might have noticed that many artists now use a clear protective film called second skin. It looks like a thin medical sticker; and that’s exactly what it is. In fact, this product has been used for years in hospitals to protect burns and wounds. What we currently use, is based on the same formula as medical protective film. However, it has been redesigned specifically for tattoos to give fresh ink the best possible start in the healing process Below, you can find everything you need to know about second skin, how to use it/remove it and what to avoid!

WHAT IS TATTOO SECOND SKIN?
Second skin is a medical-grade adhesive film. It is as a protective barrier over the fresh tattoo. It does a great job at keeping bacteria out, protects the tattoo from friction, and it’s breathable. All this, while healing naturally underneath. In contrast with traditional cling film (which suffocates the skin, blocks the skin pores and allows bacteria to grow), second skin provides a safe, breathable environment. It is essentially a healing greenhouse for a fresh tattoo. it keeps the body’s natural fluids and plasma right where they’re needed. That way, the area naturally moisturises itself with its own built-in healing magic! Your fresh ink stays protected from all outside irritants.
Is second skin right for everyone?
Not every skin type or tattoo is suitable for second skin. You should tell your tattoo artist if you are allergic to polyurethane (PU). It is uncommon, but the material can sometimes cause irritation, or an allergic reaction. If you notice symptoms such as excessive redness, unusual irritation, raised heat, or swelling above normal levels you must remove it immediately.
How We Apply It?
Right after finishing your tattoo, we thoroughly clean the area and then carefully apply the second skin. The first application can usually stay on 1–3 days, depending on the weather, humidity, and your skin.
When it’s time to remove it, do it in the shower under lukewarm water. Let the water run over the film, and peel gently in parallel to your skin (pull up if you’re peeling from the top, pull down if you’re peeling from the bottom). Use unscented soap, rinse well, then tap dry with clean paper towel. From there, you continue with the regular aftercare routine.
Some people try replacing it with another piece for a few extra days, but we’ve seen mixed results. In most cases, one application is enough.
What to Expect Under the Film
It’s completely normal for your tattoo to look blurry under the film, similar to the previous pic. You might see extra ink, plasma, or body fluids pooling under the skin. Don’t panic — this is a normal part of the process.
If, however, you see too much fluid, strong redness, or heat under the film, remove it straight away.
Benefits of Second Skin
- Protects the tattoo from bacteria, friction, and dirt
- Makes aftercare easier (no need for cream while it’s on)
- Allows the skin to breathe
- Helps reduce the risk of infection
- More comfortable than cling film: you can wear clothes over it and move around normally
Most of our clients love it, and the results have been excellent.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
💧 Swimming or sunbathing with second skin on.
🚫 Leaving the film on too long or not long enough.
⚠️ Peeling it off dry.
FAQs
Will second skin come off in the shower?
No, it’s waterproof, but keep showers short and avoid soaking it.
Do I need to put cream on while it’s on?
No, the film does all the work. Only start moisturising after removal.
What if it fills with ink and looks messy?
That’s completely normal unless the fluid buildup is excessive. If it looks unusual or uncomfortable, remove it.
Does it hurt to remove?
It can feel a little sticky, but under warm water and with patience, it comes off without damaging your tattoo.
